Choosing the right panel for joinery

Lokman Türkoğlu · Founder & Head of Design · 3 min read · Last updated:

Design visualisation of the Yeniler Etiket stand at the Eurasia Packaging Fair: a green brand fascia on a dark body, timber display units and label rolls.

Short answer

Which timber panel is used on an exhibition stand?

Four board types cover most of the work. MDF has a smooth face, so it is used where walls are painted or wrapped, though it is heavy. Chipboard is cheap and good enough for platforms, hidden structure and infill nobody sees. Plywood is lighter, holds a screw well and is preferred where panels are taken apart and rebuilt repeatedly. Melamine or laminate-faced board needs no finishing and suits fast jobs. The choice is not aesthetic: it follows the load the part carries and how many times it will be dismantled.

The reasoning follows below, section by section
