Short answer
How does a stretch ceiling work?
A stretch ceiling is a fabric surface pulled into a channel around an aluminium frame. A silicone strip sewn to the fabric edge seats in that channel, tensioning the surface evenly in every direction. If it is backlit, enough depth is left between the light source and the fabric; as the gap shrinks, individual sources read as hotspots. Translucency is the second variable: a more open fabric is brighter but shows those hotspots more readily. The system is light, travels folded and, stored properly, lasts several shows.
Frame, channel, tension
The visible part is the fabric; the part doing the work is the frame. Built from aluminium profile, it carries a channel that accepts the silicone strip sewn to the fabric edge. The fabric is fed in from one end and pushed home at the corners last; get the order wrong and a wave stays in the surface.
Frame flatness is critical. On a large ceiling panel, a slight twist in the frame is magnified by the fabric. That is why wide ceilings are divided rather than made in one piece, each section tensioned in its own frame. The division lines are made part of the design instead of being hidden.
The fabric is made to size as well. Because it stretches when tensioned, the print file is prepared slightly undersized, and if that calculation is wrong the logo distorts and straight lines bow.
Suspension points are solved with the frame. A ceiling is either carried by the walls below it or hung from the hall roof, and the second route needs permission applied for weeks before the show.
The two problems with backlighting
The first is hotspots. As the source moves closer to the fabric, individual points read as bright discs. The answer is depth: the deeper the box, the further the light spreads. Where depth is unavailable, edge-lit construction or a diffusing layer is used. That decision is made in design and cannot be fixed on site.
The second is colour. Mixing sources from different batches inside one box produces warm and cool patches across the surface. Working from a single batch at one colour temperature removes a difference the eye catches easily in the hall.
Heat is the third heading. An unventilated box gets warm, which shortens the life of the light and eventually yellows the fabric. How the electrical load is worked out is covered on our exhibition stand services page.
Access for maintenance is planned from the start. If nothing can be reached without removing the fabric, one failed source means the whole surface comes out of tension, and during show days that costs half a day.
Transport, cleaning, second use
The practical gain from stretch fabric is volume. A hundred square metres of ceiling folds into a single case; the same surface in rigid board would take half a lorry. On a fair abroad that difference lands straight on the freight invoice.
Fold marks relax in most fabrics, but if you want no permanent crease, store it rolled or loosely folded. Never under heavy material in the store.
On cleaning, the rule is this: look for the mark on the frame before the fabric. Fabric can be washed, but every wash takes a little life out of the colour. Between two fairs, if there is no visible mark, leave it alone.
The frame is where the discipline is needed. Aluminium profiles carried without covers get their channel mouths crushed, and the fabric never seats properly again. Protecting the channel comes before protecting the cloth.
Can a stretch ceiling be used at any fair?
Fabric fire class and ceiling coverage rules vary by venue. Some halls make covering above a certain proportion subject to approval, so read the technical manual first.
How deep does a backlit surface need to be?
There is no single figure; the beam angle and the fabric translucency set it. The rule is that as depth falls, a diffuser or edge-lighting becomes mandatory.
