Six months out: a fair preparation timeline

Short answer

When should preparation for a fair start?

Preparation starts the day the space is booked, which for a large fair falls six months to a year before the doors open. Design cannot begin until floor area, open sides and the position within the hall are known, because position is the first thing that binds the drawing. The rough order runs: space and budget at six months, brief and concept at four, design approval at three, production at six weeks, freight and the site plan at two. When a link slips, the time lost comes out of design revisions rather than production.
