Stands by industry: why one layout does not fit all

Short answer
Why does stand layout change by industry?
Because three things change: the physics of the product, the length of a conversation and the rules the industry carries. A five-tonne press and a gram of perfume do not share a floor, a goods lift or a display height. A tasting lasts three minutes, a capital equipment discussion forty; one wants an open counter, the other a closed room. Hygiene in food, safety in chemicals, access control in defence come before design rather than after it. The floor area may be identical, but once those three inputs change the plan is rebuilt.
The product sets the plan
The first question is how the product enters the stand. If it is carried by hand, the layout is free and the display goes where you want it. If it comes in on a forklift, the turning aisle is left clear from the beginning and the wall across that aisle is closed last. If it is lowered by crane, the stand stays open at the top until the build is finished: suspended ceilings, beams and lighting tracks are left to the end. That single question changes the build sequence, and with it the schedule.
The second is weight. Hall floors carry a limited load per square metre and the figure is printed in the exhibitor manual. Heavy exhibits are placed against that limit: usually near a column axis, without a platform, on a load-spreading plate. The fewer feet the product stands on, the higher its point load, so a four-legged bench is harder on the slab than a palletised item of the same weight.
The third is size. A roll of fabric and a generator do not share a display case. As the product gets smaller the display surface grows and the stand turns into a shelving system; as it gets larger the product becomes the display and the stand becomes its frame. The mistake at either end is the same: a small product lost in a large void, a large product jammed into a tight bay.
Dwell time divides the floor
The second input that separates industries is how many minutes a typical conversation lasts. At short-contact fairs — food, packaging, cosmetics — the visitor stands, looks, tastes, leaves a card and walks on. On that kind of stand the seating stays small, the counter facing the aisle runs long and the display concentrates at eye level. Most of the floor goes to product and circulation, and enclosed volume drops to a minimum.
At long-contact fairs — machinery, medical, defence, energy — the visitor sits down, opens a drawing, puts a sample on the table and talks price. Here a closed or half-closed meeting area can take a third of the stand. Storage grows too: catalogues, technical documents, samples, laptops and refreshments all live inside for the run of the show. Build both on the same floor area and you get two entirely different plans.
The estimate is made at the start of the job, by asking the sales team. If nobody knows how many conversations happened at the last fair, how long they ran and how many were held sitting down, the plan rests on guesswork. The difference between stand types is not only material; it is which kind of conversation each one makes room for.
Rules the industry brings
The third input is the set of obligations that arrive before design. Food fairs ask for washable surfaces, a sink and a waste water solution. Chemical fairs forbid samples in open containers and require local extraction for anything that smells. Defence fairs decide by badge who may enter the closed part of a stand, and the build crew is registered in advance. Medical fairs expect privacy in the demo area. None of this decorates the design; all of it bounds the plan.
These rules sit in the venue technical manual and sometimes in the industry’s own regulations. They should be read before the space contract is signed, because clauses on stand height, material fire class, sample quantities and photography restrictions bind the display concept directly. A clause read late can mean dismantling a stand that has already been built.
The practical method: write those three inputs — physics, duration, rules — on a single page. That page is the first page of the brief. Handing the designer those three lines instead of the name of an industry puts the first concept straight where it belongs. After that, the stand design process runs in the same order whatever the sector.
Can we use one stand at two different industry fairs?
The structure can stay the same; display and graphics change. On a sharp jump such as food to machinery, the flooring and storage solution also have to be rebuilt.
